Career Plans

I am currently employed full-time as a Captain/Paramedic with the City of Charleston's Fire Department; currently assigned to Rescue 482 - A-Shift. I have also served several year as a Mobile Critical Care Paramedic and Flight Paramedic with KCEAA and HealthNet. I own and run Public Safety Solutions, a small business catering to emergency and construction vehicle upfitting, two-way radios, and other related equipment, Finally I am employed part-time with Metro 911/Kanawha County Homeland Security & Emergency Management as a radio technician.

Why did you join the fire department?

I joined the fire department in order to help the community in times of need.

What are your hobbies and/or interests outside of the fire department?

Spending time with my wife and step-sons, church, and I enjoy most outdoor activities, especially: camping, boating, snow skiing, & and riding side-by-sides.

What do you like best about being part of the fire department?

I would have to say technical rescue, especially water and rope rescue are my favorites.

What is your most memorable incident?

I have been involved with some major fire incidents in Charleston, Clendenin and Nitro, as well as many significant rescue and EMS calls with memories both good and bad. However, the best moments are when your actions make someone happy during some of the worst times they have ever experienced. For instance: saving someone's pet from a fire, or recovering the family Bible or photographs. On the EMS side of the house, my first "save" is probably the most memorable incident. A gentleman we were transporting for chest pain went into cardiac arrest. My partner and I were able to defibrillate his heart back into a normal rhythm. I visited him the following day in CCU and he was just fine!
